# 23 Week 9

Phew !!!

Finally, I made it . I just can't believe I've finished it .

It was great learning experience. There were lot of things I never knew existed. Many new web sites that were interesting and worth learning something from them. It was irritating at times especially when I had to set up new accounts with username and password, but at the same time I felt really good when I finished each blog successfully and feel a sense of accomplishment.

My favourites among them were Flickr, Online image generator, PBWiki and of course NetLibrary. I got lot of help from my colleagues at work and family and felt above the moon when I finished my WebLearning before some of my other colleagues.
Overall, I must say that it was truly a rewarding experience and I am glad that I took part in this learning programme. I would encourage each of everyone to get into it and tell others in the families and friends, though they might not be part of the ACL staff. I hope to continue my learning and update myself at the various accounts I have created in a variety of website visited during my learning.
Good luck to all and Seasons Greetings !!!

# 22 Week 9 Net Library

This is very easy !!!

I got an account set up on Net Library.Once you are in your account it was easy accessing the database of books to favourites.

NetLibrary is very versatile and provides content from leading publishers for a variety of people, eBooks and eAudiobooks . I think NetLibrary will grow in future and become more and more popular.

Net library is for students and public as it is easy to use with access to multiple formats and best-selling titles from the world's leading publishers.

I was amazed at the collection and hope to spend more time in future being a avid reader.

#21 Week 9 Podcast

I really found Podcasts very very frustrating. It took me an hour to really understand, but I finally got around it.I added the comic book rss into my blogline account.I liked Yahoo Podcasts , it gives you option of Web, Image or Audio search, I prefer image and web search
http://www.bloglines.com/
In short podcast is a digital media file, or a related collection of such files, which is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers.
Week 9 # 20 YouTube

I enjoy watching free videos online, from a number of different categories. Many internet users only watch videos on YouTube, and also post their own YouTube videos. I have never done so before, so I wonder whether or not I really should.

Perhaps, the biggest advantage to making your own YouTube videos is that your videos can be just about whatever you want them to be. Although YouTube accepts videos on a wide variety of different subjects, you will want to proceed with caution. You should always be cautious of online predators; therefore, you will want to be cautious about divulging too much information about yourself. You might not necessarily think about it, but you also want to make sure that you don’t record and post anything illegal on YouTube. It has been said that YouTube regularly works with law enforcement to help solve crimes. That just goes to show that you never really who is watching your videos or what the consequences for posting them might be.

week 8 # 19 Web2.0 Award list

I visited the the short list and I liked Picasa , as I have been using it to upload my photo's. Picasa is software that makes it easy and fun to view, organise, edit and share the digital photos on your PC. Picasa will not delete your pictures or put them online without your permission. It is easier to send it to your friends and to your family abroad . My family and friends love Picasa. Picasa organises your entire collection while you watch, scanning the images on your computer and automatically sorting them by date. It creates a new “instance” of each photo you label without taking up more space on your computer, so you can put the same picture into multiple albums. It can edit like remove red eye, fix the contrast and colour, and enhance your digital pictures. You can make a movie with your photos complete with title graphics.Pick a favourite photo as your desktop picture or add several into your screen saver rotation.

The Library conducts a number of cultural programs through out the year viz. Chinese New Year, Diwali Festival of Lights, Christmas, etc. Photographs are taken and Picasa is good way to publish these photographs and sent to various community libraries.

A GREAT way to enjoy your photographs !!!!

#15 Week 6 LIBRARY 2.0 & WEB 2.0

How have I been able to write so much? Well, it has been technology driven by the big engine called the internet and the www (dub.dub.dub) that has driven me to browse through a number of the articles about Library 2.0 and watch some videos on Youtube and other sites. Some have been so interesting and thought provoking, that I have lost count of time.
For a person like me who hates to write about anything (I don’t remember writing a letter in the last few years), I’m truly amazed that I am writing (typing) using the resources of the internet. I think that the future of library collections will be greatly influenced by this ever-developing information technology. My own personal experience show how many people are looking to the internet for information rather than books? If I'm looking for anything from recipes to facts or some quick information, jump on to the internet, do a Google search and hey presto!! There it is.
Though I like to read fictional or non-fictional books almost everytime and even when I am lazing under the beach umbrella on a holiday while my husband is off into the waters with the kids, I wouldn’t be surprised that with technology becoming more and more available and affordable in future, we find a lot of holiday makers carrying their laptops to read various books and research rather than carry a whole pile of books as part of their luggage. Is this going to happen soon? I keep asking myself, but looking at my kids doing wonders on their PC, I think it is not far away. Maybe it may not happen to me now, but maybe in my granny years !
For academics and serious researchers it is always easier to look at online journal databases rather than try and track down the whole pile of books and journals themselves in libraries. I think libraries collections will adapt their focus to being more about entertainment reading, with fictional and non-fictional sections along side with electronic format reading. Thereby reducing prime space and maintenance of hard to find books
The library system needs to wholly integrate into our technology driven world and take advantage of all the library information systems readily available to share information, not only regionally but globally. Computer. This smarter working will not only help us share resources, but also expose us to other libraries through out the world for resources that may not be readily available here, thus making a world without distances.

#16 Week 7 "WIKIS"

Wikipedia is known as open-source encyclopedia, an attempt to gather detailed information about a variety of subjects.

Wiki is a quick-to-build, easy-to-edit website on which all information can be edited, changed, or rewritten by the users or members of the site. It is a useful tool for writing, pooling knowledge or exchanging ideas, especially on a subject that changes or needs updating frequently. The word wiki is a 'hawaaiian' phrase commonly use to indicate something fast. The best thing about wiki is that anyone can make changes and it is flexible and extensible.

wiki was created to be a one-stop shop for great ideas and information for all types of librarians, as all over the world librarians are developing successful programs and doing innovative things with technology that no one outside of their library knows about. There are lots of great blogs out there sharing information about the profession.

If you've done something at your library that you consider a success, you can write about it in the wiki or provide a link to outside coverage or if you have materials that would be helpful to other librarians, you can add them to the wiki and if you know of a librarian or a library that is doing something great, you are free to include information or links to it. Basically, if you know of anything that might be useful to other librarians (including useful websites), wiki is the place to put it. Wiki can be a venue where people can share .I had a browse at number of library wikis,i liked Programs for Kids & Teens
From Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki
EZ Library Program Database from the Mid-Hudson Library System and also Wikis in the workplace: How wikis can help manage knowledge in library reference services by Angela Kille .

'Del.icio.us'

WOW!!!!
What can i say , how much more easy or simple can you one's life . Shortcuts and time saving.
I do agree that this is useful for students . One thing which really irritated me was that it took me almost 20 to 30 minutes to register as most of the username i wanted was already taken up . this shows that how popular this del.icio.us is.
Social bookmarking in simple English was great it gives you step by step visual explanation.
PLCMCL2 account was really interesting there is lot to read and browse ,i read few and few which i will be reading after posting this blog
ENTERTAINMENT

#12 (Week 5) Create a new search engine

http://www.rollyo.com/index.html

Rollyo was interesting and not that difficult as i thought i choose to create 'entertainment' as i love watching Bollywood and Hollywood movies and love to listen to music.

Rollyo puts the power of search in your hands, by giving you the tools to create your own personal search engines - with no programming required. you can easily create your own custom search engines 'Searchrolls' and explore, save, and personalize those created by others.
You can explore and save searchrolls created by other Rollyo users and share your knowledge on a particular set of topics. You can even edit Searchrolls created by others. It seems that thousand new Searchrolls are created every day!

I love to cook so next i think i will create one for recipes

Blogline account and feeds

Week 4: RSS & Newsreaders

This week about RSS was new information for me and was very impressed though it took me two to three hours to understand how to use it and once i set up my blogline account and got all my feeds added, well it was not that bad.it helps to keep up with all new and interesting news. I have also added MTV also to my feed.

I also visited Topix.net, Syndic8.comand,Technorati.I liked Topix.net as it gives local news and talk for Auckland, New Zealand. It covers all topic including sports , entertainment etc.

Technorati is some what similar. It also covers most of the topics, but i prefer Topix.net. In
Syndic8.com you can find RSS and Atom news feeds on a wide variety of topics. There is a lot to explore.

Too many choices. It is very difficult to say which is good or difficult you have to keep exploring and go to all of the sites and keep trying new feeds and information.

Library

# 11 (week 5)

Library Thing

I have visited the site ,it is interesting .Sine i work in the library ,i am aware of the latest books which are out and when the next one is coming out or been published etc and i have my own favourite website marked in my personal computer so i do not feel the need to sign in for library thing but it is a good for people who are quite busy ,or find little time to spent in the library. They can sit at home and use the online service.

Library Thing is an online service to help people catalog their books easily. You can access your catalog from anywhere—even on your mobile phone. It also connects people with the same books, comes up with suggestions for what to read next. Library Thing is also a great place for authors to connect on a personal level with their readers. i have taken the library thing tour,it gives detail explanation as to how to go about.

my account for library thing is
http://www.librarything.com/profile/shreeja

I have added only books written by my favourits author.Ihave read all their books and just waiting to read their latest.

I always loved snow white ,it is my favourite. i love cartoons especially the snow white and the seven dwarfs, Cinderella and of course mickey mouse and Donald duck. Technology

Week3 # thing7
It is very difficult to choose one technology to talk about as you have new one say every next month. To me digital camera is the most fascinating technology, cause it allows you to take photo and see at that instance whether the photo has come good and if you don't like the photo delete it and take another one, unlike the old one where you click two three photo not knowing whether the photo has come the way you want.Another thing is that you can store the Photo in your computer and send it your friends or create a common link, or a create CD etc. another very important thing is it is very small to carry, fits easily in your purse or your pocket.

Flickr

This is the week three 6 'thing'

I visited the the Flickr Montager. I really found it very interesting . It is a big picture created by about 500 to 1000 tiny pictures and it also allows you to look at each picture individually. you can have different topic like flowers. It is really amazing, you can create a face of a person with few tiny pictures or a flower and the best part is that you can see the tiny individual picture when you click on them. you can also choose different topics.

TAJ MAHAL

This is Week Three.
It is all about Photo's and Images .

Help people make their photos available to the people who matter to them and enable new ways of organizing photos .

I choose to write about Taj Mahal.

Taj Mahal is regarded as one of the seven wonders of the world. It was built by a Muslim, Emperor Shah Jahan (died 1666 C.E.) in the memory of his dear wife and queen Mumtaz Mahal at Agra, India. Taj Mahal was constructed over a period of twenty-two years, employing twenty thousand workers. It was completed in 1648 C.E. at a cost of 32 Million Rupees . Taj Mahal (meaning Crown Palace) is a Mausoleum that houses the grave of queen Mumtaz Mahal at the lower chamber. The grave of Shah Jahan was added to it later. The Taj is the most beautiful monument built by the Mughals, the Muslim rulers of India. Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble. The Taj seems to glow in the light of the full moon .
